On 18 April 2013, the Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM) held a solemn ceremony on the 20th anniversary of its establishment. The ceremony was attended by representatives from relevant central and local government agencies, Viet Nam’s aviation industry units, VATM's former senior staffs as well as over 300 staffs on behalf of more than 3000 VATM’s staffs.
Twenty years ago, on 20th April 1993, the Air Navigation Department of Viet Nam (currently VATM), an administrative and economic unit with revenues, was established under Decision No. 746/TCCB-LD by reforming the Vietnam Air Traffic Services’ organization. This event marked a memorable milestone in the development of Vietnam’s aviation industry and in the process of integration into the global civil aviation community.
“Twenty years of development is not a long period in comparison with the history of Viet Nam’s aviation industry. However, this period witnessed the renewal of economic thinking, the innovation of managerial mechanism, and numerous investments in human resources & technical equipments of VATM in order to provide air traffic services with high quality” Mr. Hoang Thanh – VATM Chairman of the Members’ Council at the Ceremony said.

Currently, VATM has invested in new advanced technology comprehensively to enhance the service quality. Moreover, training activities of human resources have been always considered as one of the most important fields. Many in-country and overseas training activities have been conducted to enhance professional skills and meet requirements of assigned tasks. These efforts have been demonstrated in typical achievements of VATM in recent years, including:
- Total revenue increased continuously with an approximately level of 10% on average.
- Number of controlled flights was over 4.6 million of flights.
- VATM received the International Air Transport Association (IATA)’s Eagle Awards for the most improved air navigation service provider in 2009.
At the ceremony, on behalf of former leaders of VATM, Mr. Tran Xuan Mui, Former Director General of VATM & Labor Hero in Innovation Period, shared with participants memorable milestones in the development of VATM during the past 20 years. On behalf of VATM’s young generation, Ms. Huynh Ngoc Yen – an air traffic controller, who gained the title “Nationwide Young Skilled Workers” in 2012, also shared her feelings at the Ceremony. She expressed the determination of young generation to preserve and promote tradition of previous generations so as to help VATM develop and actively integrate into international aviation community.

To acknowledge the great effort of VATM through a period of twenty years as well as to encourage VATM’s staffs, the Prime Minister has awarded VATM the Prime Minister’s Certificate of Merit.
The ceremony on the 20th anniversary of VATM’s establishment is an opportunity for VATM’s staff to recall the 20 years of establishment and to identify targets and goals for the development in the future.
