New flight procedures applied at Noi Bai International Airport

On March 20, 2025, the Viet Nam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM) officially applied new flight procedures at Noi Bai International Airport, using satellite navigation technology. The first flight operated under the new procedure was Vietjet Air's VJC198, which departed from Tan Son Nhat International Airport and landed safely at Noi Bai International Airport.

Noi Bai International Airport plays a crucial strategic role in Viet Nam’s aviation system and has been prioritized for study and implementation of modern flight procedures. Eight years ago, it was the first airport in Viet Nam to apply PBN (Performance-Based Navigation) procedures using the Point Merge technique, improving air traffic management and airport operations.

To meet the increasing operational demands, VATM has directed the study, design and addition of new flight procedures, including the RNP approach using satellite navigation alongside the existing ILS procedures. PBN flight procedures have also been adjusted to optimize flight operations, reducing conflicts between departing and arriving aircraft flows. A notable point is the new design of the missed approach procedure to avoid intersecting with approaching or departing aircraft, helping to ensure uninterrupted operations at the airport.

To ensure the safe and effective implementation, VATM has developed a detailed plan and organized theoretical and practical training on a simulation system for air traffic controllers and flight data processing personnel.

According to VATM’s Director General Nguyen Cong Long, the application of new flight procedures not only enhances service quality but also contributes to the sustainable development of Viet Nam’s aviation sector.

In the future, VATM will continue to study and apply modern technologies to meet growing air traffic demands while ensuring national security.
